Usage Analytics- Track Field Usage Across Dashboards

Idea: usage analytics reports can tell what reports use a certain field?
Filter by a certain field in the usage analytics report and you will see all dashboards using that field.
It would also be beneficial to track table usage in dashboards too.

Use Case: region will be renamed to region_usa in our sql query and this could potentially break dashboards. to be proactive, i would like to know what dashboards are currently using the field 'region' so that I can redirect them to the correct field, 'region_usa' once the sisense schema & sql has been updated.

    Hello alisonhenley,

Thank you for submitting your idea! This is possible through the API, but it would be nice to see it in the Usage Analytics data model.

I have brought this Idea to the product team and will post updates here as they are available.

One of the ways we prioritize development efforts is by community interest. I encourage other users to vote and comment on this suggestion. The more engagement an idea receives the higher the likelihood of it being considered for implementation.

Thank you for being a valuable part of our community!

  • Hey alisonhenley -

I know your request is for this information to be incorporated into the native Usage Analytics; however, I wanted to offer up an option that is available now to address your specific use case 😃

Earlier this year, we released a plugin called the Asset Auditor. This plugin takes an inventory of all your data assets, displays the information across a set of dashboards, allowing you to better understand use and utilization. Below, I've included a few screenshots from the Asset Auditor that address the use case you described above.

On the Data Models dashboard, we have a section called Columns, which shows the number of columns/across the different tables, and which are present within the data models.

You can use the filters to select a specific column/field, like 'region', to see which tables and models it's being used in. This should make it extremely easy to see where these fields are being used.

The Asset Auditor is built on Sisense native charts and features, making it easy for you to use or customize what's provided, or to build out your own additional charts and dashboards using the documented data model.

Here, I've adjusted one of our existing charts to display the dashboards that are associated with which data models. This will help you answer your question of which dashboards will be affected based on a change to a column in the data model that it is connected to.

And finally, since you mentioned table usage in Dashboards, the Asset Auditor will show you data about your table utilization, and specifically, which tables are not being used at all (but still being brought in and built). Similar to the above, you can augment these charts to show the specific dashboards connected to the models with low table utilization.

The Asset Auditor does much more than just this, but feel free to check out the blog post, our documentation or reach out if you want some more information about the Asset Auditor!

    Thanks!
